This year, the Summer Youth Leadership Academy (SYLA) of Warwick, NY embarked upon a brave creative journey... making a pair of twelve foot tall collaborative metal sculptures for the front lawns of the Warwick Valley Community Center!
SYLA is an incredible program for the young people in the Village and the Town of Warwick, NY - and is hosted each Summer at the Warwick Valley Community Center. Fourteen Students participated in SYLA 2023 along with three Junior Mentors and three Senior Mentors.
Over the course of three days, the Students and Mentors of SYLA 2023 learned about metal sculptures and the story of AGRISCULPTURE in a presentation given by Amy Lewis Sweetman, and additionally hand painted letters onto custom made 4"x6" steel plates. Given only the primary colors along with black and white paint - the Students of SYLA let their individual creativity shine - creating a glorious rainbow of shades, textures and font designs - which they then linked together - and suspended from custom steel tripods crafted by AGRISCULPTURE. The words "Warwick Valley" on the left, and "Community Center" on the right currently grace the greenspace of the Warwick Valley Community Center - swaying gently in the breeze . These sculptures are permanent fixtures within the landscape of the WVCC - and can be enjoyed for years to come!
A very special THANK YOU to Staff Members Laura Kaplan and Dylan Holder - along with Kerry Demetroules and Executive Director Karen Thomas.
Congratulations to the Summer Youth Leadership Academy of 2023!
