MONARCH + SWALLOWTAIL : BUTTERFLY SEATS BY AGRISCULPTURE FOR WARWICK VALLEY COMMUNITY CENTER
For the fourth year in a row, Warwick Valley Community Center has a brand new and permanent public art installation on their front lawn... created by the Summer Youth Leadership Academy (SYLA) and AGRISCULPTURE - focusing on sustainability, metamorphosis and STEAM.
Simultaneously seats and sculptures, MONARCH + SWALLOWTAIL are made from dozens of recycled materials. Through a series of hands-on workshops led by Amy Lewis Sweetman, SYLA 2026 focused on transforming plastic beverage bottles into flower shaped sculptures with micro paintings on the caps for the butterfly wings, while Amy Lewis Sweetman focused on transforming antique tractor seats and antique hay tines from locally sourced tractors and farm implements into functional chairs and antennae.
Each year, the public art project commences with a presentation on AGRISCULPTURE as a mental exercise in discovering what is possible in art and in life. The students immensely enjoyed Amy's new talk: "The Independent Artist as The Sea Captain - the Adventures of Sustaining a Professional Arts Practice in Orange County, NY."
